Those of you who may have been viewing our site the past few weeks may have noticed that our comment system has gone missing, among other issues. Well this is no accident. Unfortunately we have recently been innundated with spam to the point that I had no choice but to remove comments altogether until we can better protect ourselves. In an unrelated matter, the mobile version of our site has gone missing, due to a server error which basically wiped most of our plugins away. We are hard at work rectifying these issues, and will update right here when we have more information about when we will be fully operational once again.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

What would you do if you and your teenage cohorts were out causing mischief in South London and the night sky began to rain bestial creatures with fur as black as obsidian and luminescent teeth glowing indigo? The new indy British sci-fi adventure, Attack The Block, aims to investigate this pressing perplexity.

Fresh from the producers of Shaun of the Dead, Attack The Block takes a handful of new name actors and sends them through 90 minutes of fighting off aliens with a thrifty, amateur style that includes weaponizing everything aside from the kitchen sink. Elements of shock, trepidation, laughter, cannabis, sharp objects, irony, and morality all gel together making this movie a well-rounded experience.

The film wastes no time getting off the ground. Like reading an independent graphic novel, we meet our characters, a rag-tag group of teenage muggers in the midst of robbing a nurse in the streets, and immediately have them confront one of the featured creatures – after it falls from the sky and obliterates a high-end vehicle. The comrades then have to study their enemy from their exposure in the field and defend their home; “the block.” Victims become allies, enemies emerge as worse enemies and your friends will die! No one is safe. The movie holds firm by combining B-movie thrills of hazard and peril with a solid tale of character growth and evolution.

The boys from "Attack the Block"

Although it seems evident that this was a lower budget production, the smooth editing style, indie-tech score, and, above all else, low-lit, urban cinematography show

that no corners were cut in its construction. The overall look and feel is realistic enough to invest in what is at stake albeit cinematic enough to enjoy the farcical.

The nearly nameless cast should not make audience members weary. The fresh faces are highly believable and up to the task. No one’s lack of character breaks fourth wall for a second. And even if anyone looks to find someone familiar, do not fret, dear readers, for Nick Frost joins in on the action so as to alleviate any anonymity.

Nick Frost as his stoner persona.

Attack The Block can apply to wide range of moviegoers, ranging from the geeky, the artistic, fans of horror, fans of science fiction, and action enthusiasts. It comes as no surprise that this film took the Midnight Screening Audience Award at South By Southwest (SXSW) this year. Be on the lookout for it when it endures a limited release in the US on July 29th of this year.

Does Not Suck.
